Yoga

At The Hummingbird Centre, we promote a holistic approach to mental health and understand the importance of whole-body integration in healing and processing. The ever-growing body of research documenting yoga’s psychological benefits suggest yoga may reduce stress, relieve anxiety and depression, strengthen social attachments and improve sleep quality.

Yoga 5 tips

You don’t have to be a disciplined yogi to start integrating yoga into your life. Adults and kids alike can reap the benefits and have a lot of fun in the process!

Here’s 5 easy ways to be curious about yoga and connect to your body:

• Pay attention. Every now and then, be conscious of how your body feels when you inhale and exhale. Check in and notice any tension you may be carrying in different parts of your body. Drop those shoulders and loosen that clenched jaw!
• Prioritise comfort. Take a small moment of your time, maybe in your seat right now, to make your body as comfortable as possible.
• Set an intention. Choose a few gentle poses and set an intention to ensure you use your time, no matter how short, constructively. Intentions might include creating spaciousness in a part of your body or noticing and letting go of any emotions that arise without judgement.
• Practice Shavasana! This is one of our favourite restorative poses. This is performed lying still on the ground on your back with your legs stretched out and arms slightly away from the body. It’s a beautiful and easy pose that calms the nervous system. Just try not to fall asleep!
• Connect to your community. Research your local yoga groups, grab a mate, and give it a go! You might be surprised about the variety of people who attend and the different options available (hello puppy yoga!)
