ADHD

Understanding ADHD

At The Hummingbird Centre, we offer neuroaffirming assessments and support for individuals across the lifespan with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). We recognise ADHD as a natural variation in attention, motivation, and regulation — not a flaw, but a different way of processing and interacting with the world.

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a set of neurodevelopmental differences that affect how people regulate attention, energy, emotions, and tasks. It often involves challenges with focus, impulsivity, organisation, and time management — but also brings creativity, energy, and innovation.

ADHD can present differently in each person and may shift over time. It is often inherited and usually persists into adulthood.

Some people with ADHD experience significant difficulties with daily functioning, which can affect their well-being, relationships, or education. We support individuals and families in understanding these challenges and finding practical, strengths-based strategies to navigate them.

Common Traits of ADHD

  • An attention style that shifts quickly
  • Engaging in spontaneity and quick decision-making
  • Differences in time perception
  • A preference for sequencing tasks based on interest or urgency
  • Mental and/or physical restlessness, especially when unengaged
  • Deep emotional responsiveness and intensity
  • Inventive thinking, and bursts of creative energy

These traits may vary by context, and many can become powerful strengths when understood and supported.

Subtle Presentations and Masking

ADHD is often underdiagnosed in women, girls, and adults due to less visible symptoms like daydreaming, internalised stress, or emotional dysregulation. Many people with ADHD mask their difficulties to appear “together,” leading to chronic overwhelm or burnout. A comprehensive assessment can uncover hidden patterns and provide relief, understanding, and practical strategies.

How Therapy Can Help Individuals with ADHD

  • Therapy can provide meaningful support for people with ADHD by helping them:

    • Improve their self-understanding and confidence
    • Develop executive functioning and emotional regulation strategies
    • Reduce shame and stress related to past academic or workplace struggles
    • Learn to manage overwhelm and burnout
    • Identify goals and build motivation with realistic supports

We work collaboratively to tailor therapy in a way that honours how each person’s brain works best.

ADHD and Creativity

ADHD brains are often fast, curious, and idea-rich. Many artists, performers, athletes, and entrepreneurs have shared their experiences with ADHD including Clementine Ford, Michael Phelps, Channing Tatum, Simone Biles and Emma Watson.

Getting an ADHD Diagnosis

A formal ADHD assessment can help clarify strengths and challenges, explain past experiences, and inform workplace, school, or lifestyle supports. Our clinicians use gold-standard tools and a respectful, neurodiversity-affirming process for children, teens, and adults.

Support Across the Lifespan

We work with:

  • Children who can benefit from support with attention, behaviour, or school
  • Teens navigating motivation, friendships, and identity
  • Adults dealing with burnout and the effects of ADHD symptoms on self-concept
  • Parents wanting to better understand and support their child

If you’re ready to explore whether ADHD might be part of your picture, we’re here to help.
